2008 Legislative Broadcast Internship

Arizona Capitol Television is offering several paid internships to qualified college students during the 2008 spring semester – the Second Regular Session of the Forty-eighth Arizona State Legislature.

These broadcast internships give students a rare opportunity to gain an insiders' understanding of the legislative process while developing their television production, journalism and communication skills in a professional work environment.

Interns work full-time at the State Capitol (January-May) producing video coverage of legislative proceedings for the Internet and cable television.
They earn a paycheck, a tuition waiver, and up to 12 hours of upper division class credits. Students living outside of Maricopa County may also qualify for partial reimbursement of travel expenses.

2008 Legislative Broadcast Internship
(January-May)
Job Description

Interns work for Arizona Capitol Television, a nonpartisan office of the Arizona State Legislature. They will have an opportunity to do the following:

  • Operate robotic cameras to produce live coverage of House and Senate proceedings for the Internet and closed circuit cable television.
  • Research, write, shoot, edit, and produce video segments for Arizona Capitol Television, Arizona’s version of C-SPAN, 24/7 television channel which can be seen on Cox Digital Cable.
  • Conduct television interviews with legislators and legislative staff.
  • Learn about various aspects of broadcast journalism and television production from industry professionals.
Eligibilty

Candidates for a Bachelors or Masters degree at one of Arizona's universities are invited to apply. Students attending other institutions of higher education should contact the broadcast center to inquire about eligibility.

 

Qualifications
A background in broadcast journalism and/or experience with video/audio production is preferred but NOT required. Ideal candidates will have strong writing skills and familiarity with video cameras, switchers, and non-linear video editing.
Questions & Answers

Is this a paid internship?
Yes. Interns recieve a $4,200 stipend, plus a tuition waiver. Plus, they'll earn up to 12 hours of upper division class credit.

How long does the internship last?
It starts in January and lasts about 18 weeks.

How many broadcast interns are hired?
Typically, 6-8.

Do I have to be a broadcast journalism student?
No. Journalism and/or electronic media experience is preferred, but not required.

What's the application process?

  • Applications must be completed and submitted to your campus coordinator no later than 5:00 p.m., October 5, 2007.
  • Qualified applicants will be interviewed at the State Capitol in October.
  • Interns will be selected and notified in mid November.
  • Orientation starts the first week of January at the State Capitol.
